The history of Govind Dev Ji Temple is deeply connected with the spiritual heritage of Vrindavan. According to tradition, the idol of Lord Govind Dev Ji was carved by Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, based on descriptions given by Krishna's family. The idol was later rediscovered in Vrindavan by Rupa Goswami, one of the foremost saints of the Gaudiya Vaishnav tradition.
During the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, many temples in North India were threatened. To protect the sacred deity, the idol was moved from Vrindavan to the Jaipur region under the protection of the Kachwaha rulers. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II later established the present temple in Jaipur in 1735 AD, placing it within the City Palace complex so that he could have daily darshan directly from Chandra Mahal, his royal residence.
