The temple was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur city. He brought the sacred idol of Govind Dev Ji from Vrindavan to Jaipur to protect it and established the temple within the City Palace complex. Shree Govind Dev Ji Temple is among the most sacred Krishna temples in India. The idol of Govind Dev Ji is traditionally believed to have been carved by Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, based on descriptions given by Krishna's family. The deity was later rediscovered in Vrindavan by devotees. During Emperor Aurangzeb's reign, many temples in North India were threatened. To protect the sacred idol, it was moved from Vrindavan to Amer under the protection of the Kachwaha rulers.
